Alasdair Macdonald Co-Founder at Broadhaven

Today we interview Alasdair MacDonald from Broadhaven to give freelance sales reps an in-depth understanding of the company and sales opportunity available.

1. Where did the inspiration for Broadhaven come from?

Blockchain is changing the world. Yes, there have been scams and charlatans, and yes cryptocurrencies can be used for illegal purposes. But what technology didn’t have growing pains? The Internet took years to overturn legacy ways of doing business. Blockchain has just started to shake up established structures: it is dislocating industries, creating new markets, removing intermediaries, and more yet to come and yet-to-be discovered. These opportunities and the positive potential are why we work in this field.

With disruption comes FUD (fear, uncertainty, and doubt). For every good project, there are two bad ones. Blockchain can seem full of those looking to get rich quick, or those who don’t understand the technology and want to “blockchain all of the things”. We know these pitfalls. And we have seen how undisciplined teams can misuse the technology or fail as businesses. We want to help clients seeking the potential of blockchain navigate this confusing and complex space. We bring discipline, rigour, and creativity to help our clients understand and explore how blockchain can evolve existing processes (or perhaps how to create entirely new offerings).

2. Tell us a little about your expertise in the blockchain arena

Whilst still in the Army in 2015, founder Tim began mining cryptocurrencies and has been evangelising the technology ever since; founder Alasdair was one of his early converts. Having closely followed progress in this space as spectators, we transitioned from cybersecurity into full-time Blockchain in late 2017.

On the technical side, we have built full stack applications on Ethereum and EOS and integrated with Bitcoin, and architected blockchain-based applications. We focus much of our effort on staying up to date and involved with the field writ large. Wider, we advocate agile and DevOps processes and have delivered successful projects using these methodologies. From a business perspective, we have built target operating models that integrate blockchain services and designed economic models (so called token economics) based on the creation and release of new cryptographic tokens to incentivise desired behaviours.

Outside of work, we have built two experimental projects that are designed to entertain and educate the general public on the potential of blockchain: mintmytoken.com and cardsofcrypto.com. We have competed in two blockchain hackathons where we built working blockchain prototypes in less than 36 hours.

3. Can you tell us about some of the work you have carried out to date?

One aspect of Blockchain that we love most, is the breadth of application. This has led us to work on a range of projects across multiple industries and use cases. Including: programmatic advertising, mobile games, supply chain provenance, loyalty points, hyper targeted and localised ads, renewable energy and carbon trading, and security tokens.

Each project has been unique and often required bespoke products. We love the variety and, whether its drafting a whitepaper, conducting competitor analysis, assisting with AML requirements, or building a decentralised application (dApp), we always strive for high quality solutions.

4. What’s your greatest client success story?

Helping design, build and launch a decentralised application (dApp) for a client which will hopefully transform their sector. We supported and collaborated across several business workstreams at every level: strategy, operating model, technology, regulation, marketing. Watching the project demoed to a live audience was the high point; seeing how well it worked and how well it was received was the cherry on top.

There are two reasons why this project is a success story. First, we helped deliver an innovative product connecting new customers to blockchain technology; and second our relationship with the client has extended over 6 months and across several contracts.

As an end result, this client has created a new revenue stream and is on the leading edge of innovation in their sector. They have become a thought leader and are now regularly sought for comment from the press. It has been a great journey.

5. What made you consider wanting to work with independent sales agents?

Blockchain is a young technology that is applicable across a range of industries. However, our cybersecurity background is niche. We want as wide a client base as possible and therefore we felt that Commission Crowd’s network of sales agents would help us rapidly increase our exposure.

6. Why would sales agents have an edge selling your products/services?

Credibility and price. The blockchain industry is flooded by promises but despite the good (and bad) intentions there is little delivery. We have proven technical, product management, and leadership credentials from our work in the industry and time in the Army. These should assure agents that we are trustworthy and delivery-focused so that they can confidently introduce us to their network. Added to this, blockchain expertise is scarce and blockchain consultancy services are at a premium. Both our deal structure and pricing model make us excellent value to clients who want to explore the potential of blockchain.

7. What makes your services unique, innovative and sets you apart from the competition?

First working together as officers in the British military, we have collaborated on several technical projects within the intelligence and cyberwarfare domains. This experience has provided us with a track record in delivering high profile projects in stressful environments to demanding clients. As a marker for the impact of this output, Tim’s work was formally recognised when he was awarded an MBE in 2016.

While standards and formal education develop in blockchain, our military, academic and cybersecurity background provides us with transferable skills and qualifications that set us apart from the competition. Within our team we retain: an MSC in computer science, CISSP, CSSP, ISO 27001, COBIT 5, and several project management qualifications.

8. What are you plans for the future of Broadhaven?

The current state of the blockchain industry is comparable to the Internet in the mid-90s. We are excited to work in a space where innovation and growth are forecast, but with a future unfixed and still to be determined. As blockchain grows, we want to become deeper subject experts and build long lasting relationships with both sales agents and clients. Ultimately, we want Broadhaven to be a trusted name within the blockchain industry.

9. What are your best-selling products/services and why?

We have received excellent feedback on our ‘Introduction to Blockchain’ workshops and reports. Over the course of two short sessions, we can educate our clients, and collaborate with them to understand how blockchain technologies might enhance their business. Following these sessions, we conduct further research, market and competitor analysis, and a technical study before presenting a bespoke report. We have found this delivers clarity to clients, provides a straightforward strategy and clear route forward for adoption. Further, this product doesn’t break the bank before clients commit to a larger project. In several instances, these introductory workshops and reports have led us to develop a prototype platform and applications, and, just as importantly, in other instances it helped clients understand that blockchain was not right for them at the moment.

10. Have you received any recognition or awards for your products/services?

Our greatest reward is repeat business. We have been lucky enough to establish lasting relationships with clients who have consistently returned to us for expertise and advice over the course of their blockchain projects.

11. Please describe the typical sales cycle and process to sales agents.

We operate a standard sales cycle with our clients. However, the central focus has always been the active engagement of the Broadhaven team when presenting the offer. For sales agents wishing to partner with us, we are keen to invest our time with the agent and potential client – ultimately, we are the product being sold.

12. How do you currently bring in new business or win contracts?

Currently, the overwhelming majority of our business has come from referrals. While this has been gratifying and rewarding, we are looking to expand our portfolio and focus more on delivery rather than looking for clients – hence our desire to be connected to sales agents with strong networks across a wide range of industries. While we have been successful utilising word of mouth, we now feel we have verifiable experience and credentials to be able to sell to a wider market outside of our own network. We are looking forward to meeting sales agents who will help us achieve this.
